The Unexpected Power of the Organic Strawberry

In the UK, summertime and strawberries go hand in hand. Strawberries and cream is as much a British institution as the royal family or afternoon tea. Of course, everyone knows how good strawberries taste; but you may be surprised to learn that they also provide some amazing health & beauty benefits…

But, beware, when buying strawberries: only buy organic. The lengths some growers in the US have gone to—including the widespread use of toxic fogging—to make the red berries larger, redder and available year round, renders the non-organic version, for several reasons, completely unpalatable.

Studies have shown that strawberries, which are high in potassium and folate, are beneficial for those with high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis. They can also help reduce the risk of certain cancers and are reported to enhance memory function. OK, so you’d probably have to eat a lot of organic strawberries to significantly improve any of the above; but still, they’re a delicious and nutritious part of a well-balanced diet.

Importantly, from a skin care point of view, as they are rich in vitamin C, flavonoids and salicylic acid they are particularly good for mature skin.

Vitamin C is vital for two reasons. One, it is essential for the production of collagen in the dermis and two; it is a powerful antioxidant and can help reduce skin damage caused by free radicals.

Flavonoids are compounds widely found in the plant kingdom. Scientific research has shown that they can influence several levels of the skin. The stratum corneum, the uppermost layer of the epidermis, is very rich in lipids and other easily oxidisable compounds. In this layer flavonoids can play an efficient role as anti-oxidizing agents and free radical scavengers. Their powerful antioxidant properties enable them to even influence deeper, epidermal skin layers, preventing UV radiation damage amongst other things. In the dermis, flavonoids can strengthen capillaries. They’re also known to have anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid and loosens dead skin cells, especially in and around the pores. So it’s really good for oily and blemished skin. But it also speeds up cell turnover which is important for mature skin as the regeneration process tends to slow down considerably as we get older. Salicylic Acid is great for treating sun-damaged or hyperpigmented skin, and has some anti-inflammatory properties as well!

At Bloom Organics Day Spa, we offer several products that include the power of the organic strawberry. Éminence Organic’s Strawberry & Rhubarb Serum, Strawberry & Rhubarb Masque and my personal favorite, the Strawberry & Rhubarb Dermafoliant. It is the gentlest exfoliant you will find.
